Our Mission
Inspirational Spirit of the Phoenix, Inc., founded by Tynia Canada, is an organization whose mission is the empowerment of women of all races, colors, religions and creeds, from all walks of life. The name is derived from the mythological bird, the Phoenix that consumed itself by fire and then arose renewed by its ashes. Just as the Phoenix was able to renew itself, we as women can also rise above the most difficult of circumstances.

We are an organization that is growing and we welcome new members. We will have a membership table for people to join at all of our events.

Our Vision
Our vision is the realization of the power, we as women have to make ourselves and families better world citizens, and to make our communities more representative of the goodness and caring we all have inside. This organization is committed to helping women who in many cases have given up. We want these women to know that there is an organization out there who has confidence in their ability to overcome the most desperate of situations, and like the Phoenix , rise from their despair more confident than before

Helping Ourselves
By helping ourselves and other women, through discussion, networking, research and commitment, we help our families and our communities. In addition, serving as a role models and mentors, we provide inspiration to our sisters who find themselves in various situations. As a result, we have added a new division to our group. This division will deal with mothers who have lost custody of their children and are finding it very difficult to navigate the court system and/or government agencies. We will also assist women going through divorces, and the monetary issues that come up in these cases, child custody issues, and other family issues. These women will benefit from the combined skills and resources available through Inspirational Spirit of the Phoenix, Inc. Using these resources will enable these women to get through all the bureaucracy.

Sharing
We hold quarterly meetings to share our knowledge and experiences with other women, in a positive and caring atmosphere. The goal is that by the end of each meeting each attendee will feel spiritually uplifted and through knowledge, have the power to succeed in her endeavors. At each meeting there is a panel of women, each of whom has expertise in a different area, that discuss topics of concern and interest. The women on the panel are chosen through extensive research by organization members in order to provide the most complete picture of each issue at hand. This in turn empowers these women to better themselves, their families and their communities.

Governance
We have a very distinguished and diverse Advisory Board who bring their knowledge and life experiences with them to insure that all points of view are heard and discussed. Our Board of Directors are a vital role in the success of Inspirational Spirit of the Phoenix, Inc.

History
How did the "Inspirational Spirit of the Phoenix" get started?

The idea came about when Tynia was planning a sleep over for her girlfriends and college friends, most of whom were in different states and rarely had a chance to spend time together.

She and one of her friends realized the diverse backgrounds that they all had, and decided that something productive had to come out of that weekend.

So, as Tynia began to contemplate her life, the lives of her friends and the history of the strengths of women coupled with the diverse professions of the, ladies and their triumphs and struggles, and the strong role models in her family, she came up with the name "Inspirational Spirit of the Phoenix".

The phoenix is a legendary bird said to consume itself by fire, rising renewed by its ashes.

Tynia held her gathering at her New York City apartment, where this idea quickly caught the attention of the media. Her guests ranged in professions from business, educators, physicians and musicians just to name a few.

One of her guest speakers was Jazz singer Sathima Bea Benjamin, the wife of South African born Jazz pianist, Abdullah Ibrahim. Sathima was a stunning 60 year-old woman. She shared her life's experience of growing up as a mulatto in Apartheid South Africa. Sathima also shared how she recorded with her long time friend Duke Ellington. She imparted words of wisdom to the younger women on dealing with life's ups and downs. She was an inspiration to the group and brought feelings of joy, compassion and strength. The ladies were taken by her dignity and pleasant spirit.

So this is what "Inspirational Spirit of the Phoenix" is all about. Coming together as women to share information, bond friendships, renew our strengths, to be empowered, and connect with our inner spirit..
